The copilot and passenger of the single-engine plane that crashed Monday afternoon at Horace Williams Airport are currently at UNC Hospitals.
FAA officials have confirmed that the plane crashed at 3:05 p.m. at the UNC-owned airport. The plane is a single-engine Cirrus SR 20, and is registered to Thomas S. Pitts LLC, based out of Wilmington, Delaware.
Kyle Henn was the only passenger on the plane. UNC Hospitals spokeswoman Stephanie Crayton says Henn is currently in fair condition.
Reports indicate that Henn has spoken to his sister, telling her he unsuccessfully attempted to pull the pilot from the plane after the crash.
The Henn family released a statement Tuesday, saying, “We are so grateful to both of the pilots for everything they did on our behalf and are both touched and broken by the events. Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their families.”
Henn is the brother of Nate Henn, who died Sunday in a bombing in Uganda. Nate was a member of a group called “Invisible Children,” which helps child soldiers.
Henn’s sister says Kyle was offered the private flight by a friend of the company he works for. Kyle was on his way to the Triangle to be with his family after Nate’s death.
Crayton says copilot Jim Donahue is also being treated at UNC Hospitals, is in critical condition and suffered injuries to his legs.
UNC Department of Public Safety spokesperson Randy Young confirmed the crash with WCHL.
Officials have temporarily closed the airport, and Young confirmed with WCHL that as of this morning it is still closed. AHEC is shuttling their people to RDU until the airport re-opens.
