Two Die From Swine Flu at UNC Hospitals

Four people have died at UNC Hospitals from the H1N1 virus known as swine flu since the outbreak occurred. Two of those deaths happened this month, says Dr. David Weber, medical director of hospital epidemiology at UNC.

The World Health Organization announced Friday that 5,000 people have died from swine flu since the virus emerged and developed into a global epidemic.

Dr. Weber says data suggests that the rate of hospitalizations and deaths occurring in those infected with the virus appear to be similar to that for seasonal flu. However, he says, if 30% or more of the population becomes stricken with the H1N1 virus, the rate of deaths and hospitalizations will rise.

Weber says two-thirds of those hospitalized after being diagnosed with swine flu have had an underlying health risk factor. He says what has been different with the swine flu is that it is mostly a disease of children, with the average age of those in the range of 10 to 20.

Pregnant women are at a higher risk, and Dr. Weber says a new group has been identified as being high risk: obese people.

On a side note, as swine flu vaccinations are relatively new to the market and public, Dr. Weber says this time next year; one vaccination that covers both seasonal and H1N1 flu will be available to the public. A combined vaccination is currently being distribution in South America.
