WCHL ReporterThe newest exhibit at UNC’s Wilson Library is entitled “We Shall Not Be Moved”, which documents the experiences of African-Americans in the South over the past two
Holly Smith, Overholser Archival Fellow for African-American studies at UNC, says the exhibit was designed for everyone to enjoy.
The exhibit is part of an initiative by the Southern Historical Collection, “Documenting the African American Southern Experience.” The Southern Historical Collection, established in 1930, contains over 24 million items.
On display will be a set of 19th Century shackles reportedly used on slaves. There will also be an original pamphlet from the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, famous for Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.
Smith says the goal of the displays is not to evoke shock, but to stimulate conversation and generate understanding. She says some of the pieces will generate a greater understanding about African-American business owners in Durham.
The exhibit will run through February 5th. Admission is free, and the public participation is encouraged. For more information, call 962-1345.
