UNC has created new regulations which will force scooter riders to purchase parking permits and use parking areas normally designated for vehicles and motorcycles.   

Brian Moynihan an employee at the UNC school of medicine and a scooter commuter, says these regulations could discourage commuters. He has started an online petition urging UNC administration to reconsider their plans.  

Under the ordinance scooters would be put in the same category as motorcycles, thus requiring a permit and parking space for scooters on campus. Because scooter and moped usage is rather new and growing, there are very few regulations. Even though UNC supports alternative forms of transportation, there are issues surrounding the usage of mopeds and scooters. Excessive speeds and scooter usage on sidewalks are the reasons regulations have been adopted.  

Moynihan adds that even though he agrees with the sidewalk regulations, commuters will still think twice about what form of transportation to use.
